Accelerated Reader (A.R.)
This year your child will be working with the Accelerated Reader Program which is part of the
reading curriculum at Hesse. Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer based assessment that tests student comprehension on books read. To ensure AR success, please make sure to ask your child comprehensive questions using the 5 W’s (Who, what, where, when, why) throughout their reading. Each second grade student will be expected to reach a minimum of four points, and have an average percent of at least 70 each marking period. Students must have at least four AR points and an 80% average to be invited to the quarterly AR Skate Party.
Students are expected to take at least two AR tests per week in order to participate in recess.
If a student scores below an 80%, they will be placed on AR probation and will have to fill out a book report before their next AR test
Please encourage your child to read every evening in preparation for their AR tests. Remember, this reading time can be counted on the reading log! AR Logs are kept in the green folder of the B.E.E. Binder to track student progress.
Remember, Accelerated Reading is an awesome comprehension tool and can really help your child become a better reader. Thanks for your cooperation and participation with this program.
